The Cannery

Salem, Oregon

Salem Cannery is a new mixed-use entertainment district along Salem’s historic riverfront. Spanning over 8 acres, the project creates a new neighborhood with almost 400 housing units and over 20,000 square feet of retail by adapting 3 historic buildings. Since 1917, the site has been home to fruit and vegetable canning facilities. The history of the site is told actively through interpretive placemaking elements and passively through reused historic metal archways, fruit tree groves, and overhead stormwater conveyance channels that reference the mass of overhead pipes and utility lines present throughout the site. The project provides direct public access to the Willamette River, Mill Creek, and a city park at the confluence of the two.
